Anne, one of our volunteer ushers, sat in on a rehearsal for festive comedy Working Christmas. She tells us what she thought.
I have been a volunteer usher at the Old Fire Station for about eighteen months. I received an email, inviting people to attend a rehearsal of ‘Working Christmas’, and, as I had already booked to usher for it, I thought it would be interesting to see it in development. My son was visiting me from Germany, so he came along too.
The cast and the director made us feel very welcome and we spent a couple of hours watching them rehearsing. Neither of us had ever seen anything in rehearsal before and we found it fascinating.
Witnessing an earlier stage of the production’s development, before it was a finished piece of work, gave an extra dimension of interest – the conversations between the director and the actors about different interpretations of the script, what the motivation of the characters might be, and how all this could be conveyed to an audience were really thought-provoking.
It’s also given me an appreciation of how much work goes into producing a piece of theatre. I’m now really looking forward to seeing the whole play!
Working Christmas runs 6 – 23 December.
