Leave a Legacy

Art is for everyone. Everyone has potential.

Thank you for considering leaving a Legacy to Arts at the Old Fire Station. Today, you can help to ensure our future for generations to come by making an addition to your Will using the sample wording provided below.

If you’re not sure whether to leave us a legacy, or want further details on how your money would be used, or to discuss tailoring your legacy to a particular element of the organisation that you’d like to invest in, then talk to our Fundraising Officer, Ellie Parker on 01865 294607 or Ellie.Parker@oldfirestation.org.uk – or fill in this form and we’ll get back to you.

Why leave a legacy?

Founded in 2011, Arts at the Old Fire Station presents new work across art forms, supporting artists, and including people facing tough times in everything we do.

Oxford is globally renowned for stunning heritage and outstanding research. It is also a place of disadvantage and inequality – 12 neighbourhoods in Oxford are amongst the 20% most deprived areas in England.

Not many people know we’re a charity. We make sure most of the money customers spend on tickets to shows goes back to the theatremakers who produced them. Trusts and foundations can’t keep us going forever, so legacies and donations will be a significant part of our future.

Oxford needs the Old Fire Station because it is about openness, inclusion, looking forward and different thinking. There is nowhere else like it.  By leaving a legacy, you can help to make sure we’re here to stay.

‘The Old Fire Station has brought hope and soul to Oxford.’

In creating a building which is a shared arts centre and homelessness centre, we have stumbled across something unexpected, and unusual. People facing tough times come to Crisis to seek support with housing, skills and employment, but they come to the Arts for a sense of purpose. We offer opportunities for people to re-label and re-imagine themselves based on what they’re good at, who they are, what they want to be – this is important to someone who may have spent much of life being seen as a set of problems.

Rather than trying to make small changes for lots of people, we’re making significant changes for a small group of individuals who engage with us over a long time. But the changes to these individuals mean a lot for our community. Words and ideas spread outwards. One by one, their relationships with other people, and with the city, are changing. And that’s happening because we are here.

Your legacy can change the lives of homeless and vulnerable people, help young and emerging artists get established and produce their best work,  make the arts available and accessible to everyone in Oxford.

Here’s how you can leave a legacy today:

It’s simple to leave a legacy – just choose your gift type, amend the suggested wording below, and add these to your Will. There is also a final clause at the end of this page that you should also include, whichever gift type you select.

All of the wording below is accurate and correct at the time of publication. However, we strongly recommend that you seek advice from a solicitor when making your Will to ensure that your intentions are honoured.

Arts at the Old Fire Station has charitable status and your gift to us will be exempt from inheritance tax and capital gains tax. If you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity, your estate could also benefit from a reduction in the rate, and therefore the amount, of any Inheritance Tax you have to pay. Please ask your solicitor for further advice and information on this.

It is totally up to you what and how much you decide to give to us, but the type of gift most likely to be valuable to us in the long term is a specific percentage of your estate (Residuary).

Here are three types of legacy gift you might consider:

Residuary

A gift of the remainder, or percentage of the remainder, of your estate after other gifts, debts and expenses have been paid. This is not affected by inflation.

Suggested wording: I give all (or a specific %) of the residue of my estate to Arts at the Old Fire Station (Charity No. 1140525) of 40 George Street, Oxford OX1 2AQ for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Director, or other duly appointed officer for the time being of the said charity, shall be sufficient discharge for my Executors or Trustees.’

Pecuniary

A fixed sum of money. The value of this may be affected by inflation so a solicitor may advise updating your will or tying the sum to inflation.

Suggested wording: I give the sum of [specific sum or description of asset] to Arts at the Old Fire Station (Charity No. 1140525) of 40 George Street, Oxford OX1 2AQ for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Director, or other duly appointed officer for the time being of the said charity, shall be sufficient discharge for my Executors or Trustees.’

Specific

A specific asset such as shares, property, personal possessions or intellectual property. Do let us know what you have in mind so we can ensure we are able to accept the item and use it as you wish.

Whichever type of gift you choose, please also add the following clause:

‘If at my death any charity named as a beneficiary in this Will or any Codicil hereto has changed its name or amalgamated with or transferred its assets to another body, then my Executors shall give effect to any gift made to such charity as if it had been made (in the first case) to the body in its changed name or (in the second place) to the body in its changed name or (in the second place) to the body which results from such amalgamation or to which such transfer has been made.’

It’s really helpful for us to know that you have included us in your Will. If you have, and you would like to tell us, please get in touch with Ellie Parker on 01865 294607 or Ellie.Parker@oldfirestation.org.uk. This is purely so we can thank you and record your intentions at the time, and places you under no obligation. Thank you.

‘To me it feels like it’s given me a different kind of place in Oxford – I feel at home in Oxford now.’
