Before The Tempest imagines what life was like on the island for Miranda and Prospero as a prequel to Shakespeare’s classic tale of love, magic and bad weather.
It’s about isolation and belonging, despair and forgiveness. It’s aboout wanting to fit in and being different. It’s about growing up. And it’s about birds.

Before The Tempest took 14 months to create, and involved 55 Crisis clients and 29 professional artists.

One of the most positive experiences I’ve had in recent years.....There’s a passion inside me and there was nowhere to put it – but Hidden Spire came along and that’s where I could put it.

We started with the phrase ‘Transforming The Ordinary’. There was a 3-week ‘summer school’ to develop ideas through creative writing and design. This was followed by a period of workshops with Crisis clients, led by artists, working as a team to create the play synopsis and source material – as well as experiment to devise the play.

Before The Tempest was performed 17 – 19 September 2015.

It was very open and inclusive – a genuinely collaborative thing. It didn’t matter who you were – it was a level playing field.
