Harriet Poppy Speed graduated from Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a first class honours degree in Furniture Design and Make in August 2018. She has since worked as a Design Engineer for Ercol Furniture, in addition to managing projects and delivering workshops as part of This Girl Makes.
She describes herself as a designer-maker-creative-thinker, as her work encourages others to assert more value on curiosity and play through the objects they use, as she strives to redefine traditional archetypes of furniture in a playful and honest way. She uses her work as an opportunity to pass on practical skills and knowledge, as well as opening up new channels for discussion. She combines her background in illustration and love of film, with her training as a furniture maker, to have a multi-disciplinary approach to her creative practice.
Her enthusiasm and wide skill set have rewarded her with many exciting opportunities. The most significant have been attending the Linley Summer School in August 2017, winning Best in Show at the 2018 Young Furniture Makers Exhibition, and being awarded the Creative & Design Prize at Oxford Brookes 2019 Fuel Awards.
