Last week, Old Fire Station played host to an extraordinary feat of endurance, determination and circus skill as Dr Ariel Dempsey spent more than four hours spinning in her cyr wheel in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record.
The current record stands at one hour and three seconds, set by Australian circus artist Sophie Bohlsen in Melbourne. Performing in front of a supportive audience in Oxford, Ariel surpassed that time three times over, completing an astonishing four-hour session in the wheel.
Speaking to the BBC about her motivation, Ariel said: “What inspired me to do it was my grandfather. I feel like he’ll be up in heaven smiling down on me.”
The attempt brought together spectators, supporters and members of the local arts community to witness a remarkable display of physical and mental resilience, and Ariel’s achievement was an inspiring moment for everyone who attended.
We were delighted to host this record attempt at Old Fire Station and look forward to it being confirmed as a new Guinness World Record!
Congratulations, Ariel, on an incredible achievement.
