Join us for a special post-show panel discussion following Before the Millennium on Monday 16 December. The conversation will be hosted by Dr Priya Atwal, with an inspiring panel featuring Sadiya Ahmed, Shaista Aziz and Professor Yasmin Khan.
This discussion will explore themes from the show – including migration, belonging, friendship, and South Asian heritage in Oxford – through the lived experiences and expertise of our remarkable panellists.
Host: Dr Priya Atwal
Dr Priya Atwal is the Community History Fellow at the University of Oxford, where she is building a new hub for ethical, innovative community-university partnership projects. Her academic research focuses on the history of empire, monarchy and cultural politics across nineteenth-century Britain and South Asia.
Her first book, Royals and Rebels: The Rise and Fall of the Sikh Empire, was published in 2020. Priya works regularly as a historical consultant and engages deeply with community history initiatives. She has collaborated with Historic Royal Palaces and presented the BBC Radio 4 series Lies My Teacher Told Me.
Panellist: Sadiya Ahmed
Sadiya Ahmed is a freelance heritage consultant and founder of the Everyday Muslim Heritage and Archive Initiative (2013), which works to address the underrepresentation of Muslims in British archives and education. Her current projects include Muslim History Maps and a collaboration with the University of Oxford documenting Oxford’s Muslim history and developing a heritage trail.
Sadiya also founded the Partition Memorial Trust, leading the campaign for a London memorial to commemorate the stories of the Partition of India and foster healing through remembrance and education.
Panellist: Shaista Aziz
Shaista Aziz is an award-winning campaigner, journalist, writer and media commentator with over twenty-five years of experience working around the world as an international aid worker. A prolific national anti-racism and equalities campaigner, Shaista’s work is rooted in intersectionality and decoloniality. She currently works as a Crisis Response Campaigner for an international human-rights organisation.
Panellist: Professor Yasmin Khan
Professor Yasmin Khan is a Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford, specialising in the history of modern South Asia, partition, migration, and warfare. She has presented acclaimed BBC2 history programmes, including A Passage to Britain and Back in Time for Birmingham, and continues to bring stories of migration and identity to new audiences.
