In this exhibition, Art and Design students from City of College present three creative projects, linked by the theme of Community.
How does the next generation envision and engage with their world?
Answered through a variety of mediums, including sculpture, fashion and textiles, photography, and film, these young artists show you their perspectives and encourage a responsibility towards the near and wider community, and the environment.
The students are all aged between 16-18 and are studying the Art and Design Level 2 Diploma and the Creative Practice: Art, Design, and Communication UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma courses.
Insects:
Exploring the hidden, often overlooked spaces in the city – the wild, natural areas where insects thrive and find shelter – Level 2 students have been researching insects and their habitats. The sculptures are designed to be illuminated, casting intricate shadows that create patterns and textures, inviting viewers to engage more deeply with the delicate connections embedded in the work. They encourage us to consider the connections within our own communities and to the environment. Insects play an essential role in sustaining life, and in this project, the students ask us to protect these essential habitats. The sculptures have been created using recycled newspaper and biodegradable paper-based tapes to reduce environmental impact.
The Streets
…
Youthquake
Youthquake, centres around creating a campaign from the viewpoint of their generation with an awareness that their life decisions could map the future. It has been created by Level 3, Year 2 students who have explored issues that are important to them and how to effectively communicate their opinions, interests, and views. Transforming recognisable items, the works, inspired by artist Bob and Roberta Smith are designed to catch the eye. As part of the new, emerging generation, they are eager for their voices to be heard and are encouraging the wider community to challenge their perhaps differing views, opinions, and choices.
