We Are All Human
Portraits were the focus of this collaborative project between Crisis members, staff and volunteers all exploring what it means to see and be seen. Using an abundance of materials from sharpies to charcoal, feathers to bamboo sticks the artists experimented with varied mark-making through playful, expressive techniques: blind drawing, using both hands at once, switching to the non-dominant hand, or never lifting the pen from the page. Staff, volunteers, and members took turns as both artist and subject, each exchange creating a moment of mutual observation and culminating in a selection of images imbued with a joyful sense of humour. Deepening the collaborative energy of this project, drawings were also cut-up, facial features isolated and reassembled through collage, forming new, imagined characters. This exhibition is a celebration of creativity and connecting as people, on a human level.
