A cultural celebration : Saturday 9 November, 1-4pm | FREE | Open to all
Join us for a special afternoon celebrating the culture and diversity of communities in Oxfordshire on the penultimate weekend of Saroj Patel’s solo exhibition, Journey of the Blue Sun. Mark Devereux Projects & Saroj Patel are proud to present four unique and powerful performances from: Alisa Apreleva, Debanjali Biswas, Alice Hackney & Harmanpreet Randhawa. Each artist will share their personal works, which resonate with the themes and stories highlighted in the exhibition. With music, singing, dancing and live art, this event promises to be a memorable close to Saroj Patel’s acclaimed exhibition.
Further information:
Alisa Apreleva is a forensic linguist and school teacher turned social matter journalist and music composer turned neurological music therapist turned neurodiversity and citizen science researcher. Alisa will be performing two traditional grief songs: one Ukrainian and one Russian.
Dr. Debanjali Biswas is an anthropologist, a dancer, choreographer and practitioner. Extensively trained in one of the rarer Indian classical dance style – Manipuri – Debanjali is the co-director of the performance collaborative – Mitradheya. Besides dancing as a soloist and with various ensembles, as a performance maker, she works on braiding research-based migrant and women’s stories with speculative fiction.
Alice Hackney will be sharing her recent work ‘She Could Sleep Anywhere’. In this performance, disability and femininity are highlighted within the world of ecology. The artist has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, both of which disproportionately affect women, and are historically understudied and underdiagnosed. Due to her chronic pain and fatigue, she needs to nap frequently regardless of her surroundings, and so the performance will last for as long as she is asleep.
Harmanpreet Randhawa is an artist working across sculpture, writing, drawing, installation and performance. Oscillating between the domestic and the sensual their practice deals with the complexities of longing, belonging and desire through an autoethnographic lens.
