A funny and moving new play written by autistic writer and poet, Rhi Lloyd-Williams. The Duck is an exploration of one woman’s world after she is diagnosed with autism.
Imagine you spent your whole life believing everyone was pretending to be someone else and that everyone constructed a mask in a similar way. Imagine that you thought that everyone stole their expressions from other people the way you did. Imagine you believed that everyone practised their small-talk over and over and over in a mirror in order to achieve the perfect reflection.
Imagine you are the ugly duckling, who instead of finding your place in the world as a swan, built a duck-mask and learnt to waddle. Imagine living a lifetime trying to fit into a space that does not fit, trying to move in ways that do not suit, trying to ignore your senses because other people don’t feel things the way you do. Imagine that somewhere along the way you fell utterly in love with the patterns that other people make, but that you don’t share.
Imagine for a brief moment that you are The Duck.
Starring Lucy Theobald, and Directed by Jo Loyn.

We hope everyone feels welcome at the Old Fire Station. We are always working to make our venue more accessible – please do let us know if we can help.
There are two entrances to the Old Fire Station: 40 George Street via the foyer, and on Gloucester Green via the shop. Both are step-free. If you are coming to a show, we ask that you use the George Street entrance, as the Gloucester Green entrance is not always open.

All spaces in the building are wheelchair-accessible via lift apart from the Theatre balcony and the Loft. If an event is in the Loft, this will be clearly stated on the event’s web page.
If you are a wheelchair user attending a sit-down show, space will be reserved for you. If you are attending a standing gig, please contact us (call the ticket office on 01865 263990 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org) and we will talk with you about your needs.
There are six steps leading up to the Loft space. If you would like to discuss hire of the space, or any of the events taking place in the Loft, please get in touch.
There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor, accessible via platform lift. Other toilets are in the basement (accessible via lift).
